Pecan & Wine Festival
in February features products from Arizona wineries, jazz, and an antique show. Armed Forces Day on the third weekend of May commemorates the "History of the Soldier" through all eras of American history with encampments and drills at Fort Verde State Historic Park. The July 4th Independence Day Celebration has family activities and fireworks. Verde Valley Pow Wow, sponsored by Cliff Castle Casino in July, presents Native American dance and drumming. The Cornfest marks the beginning of the harvest season in July with food, entertainment, arts, and crafts. Pioneer Days in September puts on a mule show, tractor pull, gun & knife show, country music concerts, and a chuckwagon dinner. Fort Verde Days, on the second weekend in October, brings back the old days with cavalry parades and drills, a barbecue, roping events, arts and crafts shows, games, and a dance.

    Hacienda de la Mariposa

    Luna Vista Bed & Breakfast (928/567-4788 or 800/611-4788,, $150-235 d) offers luxurious suites with pool, hot tub, and private patios in the countryside near Lake Montezuma, off I-17 Exit 293. Your horse can stay nearby in the stables.
    Three motels lie off AZ 260 (Finnie Flat Rd.) just east of I-17 Exit 287: Super 8 Motel (928/567-2622 or 800/800-8000, $50-55 s, $57-64 d) offers an indoor pool and hot tub. Days Inn & Suites (928/567-3700 or 800/747-9011, $72-79.50 d, $83-86 d suite) has an outdoor pool and hot tub.     Hotel at Cliff Castle Casino (just east of I-17 Exit 289, 928/567-6611 or 800/524-6343,, $74 d weekdays, $79 Fri.-Sat.) features luxury accommodations, restaurants, a casino, tours, trail rides, pool, and a hot tub; it's three miles from downtown on Middle Verde Road and opposite the turnoff for Montezuma Castle.

These normally stay open all year in the Verde Valley's mild climate. Distant Drums RV Resort (583 W. Middle Verde Rd., just northwest off I-17 Exit 289, 928/554-0444 or 877/577-5507,, $30 RV w/hookups) features large sites and a host of amenities including pool, hot tub, exercise room, store, and showers. The adult Trails End RV Park (983 Finnie Flats Rd., 928/567-0100, $22 RV/w hookups) includes showers and laundry; it's between downtown and I-17 Exit 287. The adult Zane Grey RV Park (928/567-4320 or 800/235-0608,, $20 RV w/hookups) has showers and laundry in a rural setting; look for it on the left seven miles southeast on AZ 260, just beyond the West Clear Creek bridge.
    Two campgrounds on national forest land (Red Rock Ranger District, 928/282-4119, have drinking water all year and a $12 fee, but no showers or hookups: Clear Creek Campground is six miles southeast on AZ 260, then left just before West Clear Creek bridge. Beaver Creek Campground lies to the northeast; take I-17 north to Sedona Exit 298, then turn southeast 2.3 miles on Forest Road 618; or you can turn north on Forest Road 618 from AZ 260 at a junction west of the West Clear Creek bridge.

Ming House
(238 S. Main St. downtown in Fort Verde Plaza, 928/567-9488, daily for lunch and dinner, $6-12) serves a variety of Chinese food and offers good buffets. Rio Verde Restaurant (south edge of town at 77 S. Access Rd., 928/567-9966, daily for lunch and dinner, $7-14) cooks up Mexican and some American food. Sister's and Co. Cafe (Outpost Mall on Finnie Flats Rd., 928/567-0351, $6-9.50) serves American fare daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Bashas' supermarket is also in the Outpost Mall.
    The Ranch House (Beaver Creek Golf Course at Lake Montezuma, 928/567-4492, daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, $9-19) has a large menu including dinner specialties of steak, prime rib, and seafood.
    La Fonda Mexican Restaurant (928/567-3500, Tues.-Sat. for lunch and dinner, $6-10) lies about four miles outside town on Finnie Flats Road (AZ 260) toward Cottonwood; go west two miles past I-17, then turn right 0.1 mile on Horseshoe Bend Drive.

Staff at the Camp Verde Chamber of Commerce (downtown at 385 S. The city's website has event and recreation information.
    Prescott National Forest's Verde Ranger District Office (P.O. Box 670, Camp Verde, AZ 86322, 928/567-4121,, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Mon.-Fri.) provides information on running the Verde River, wilderness areas, camping, hiking, and road conditions for the lands south and west of town. It's on AZ 260 just southeast of town.
    The post office lies just west of downtown on Finnie Flats Road.
    Native Visions (Lodge at Cliff Castle, 928/567-3035) offers van tours to Montezuma Castle, Montezuma Well, and Tuzigoot plus horseback rides through nearby hills.
