Blazin' M Ranch
(928/634-0334 or 800/937-8643, serves up a chuckwagon supper followed by a Western stage show with cowboy songs and humor. Other attractions include an old time photo studio, train and horse rides, and a shooting gallery. Don't miss the Wood 'N' West Gallery of animated wooden figures in dioramas that portray historic and humorous Old West scenes. The gate opens at 5 p.m. Wed.-Sat. for outdoor activities, 6:30 p.m. for dinner of barbecued beef or chicken or a vegetarian option, then the show starts at 7:30 p.m.; closed January and August. Dinner and show cost $34.95 adults, $32.95 seniors, and $24.95 lil' wranglers 12 and under. Reservations are recommended, especially for a vegetarian dinner. Take 10th St. past the Dead Horse Ranch State Park entrance and follow signs.
    Major annual events include the Verde Valley Gem and Mineral Show in late March, Verde Valley Birding Festival ( on the last weekend in April, Antique Auto, Cycle & Aeroplane Show and Cinco de Mayo Sizzlin' Salsa Sunday on the first weekend in May, Verde Valley Fair in early May, Fourth of July Celebration, Verde River Days (environmental programs) on the last Saturday in September, and a Christmas Parade in early December.

Garrison Park
(928/634-7468) near the corner of E. Mingus Avenue and Sixth Street offers tennis courts and a summertime swimming pool. Riverside Park, near the turnoff for Deadhorse Ranch State Park, has picnic tables, playground, ball fields, and a skate park. The 18-hole Verde Santa Fe Golf Course (928/634-5454) is five miles northeast of town on Hwy. 89A.

In the dimly lit interior of Nic's Italian Steak & Crab House (925 N. Main St. in Old Town Cottonwood, 928/634-9626, nightly for dinner, $10-29), chefs prepare tasty seafood, Tuscan-style grilled steaks, ribs, chicken, veal, and pasta; no reservations taken. Artwork decorates Old Town Cafe (1025 N. Main in Old Town Cottonwood, 928/634-5980, Tues.-Sat. for breakfast and lunch, $6-7.50), which has an espresso bar, pastries, soups, salads, and sandwiches.
