Gateway Visitor Information Centers
Both Sedona-Oak Creek Canyon Chamber of Commerce and Coconino National Forest people staff the information desk of Uptown Gateway (P.O. Box 478, Sedona, AZ 86339, 928/282-7722 or 800/288-7336, www.visitsedona.com, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Sun., 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Mon.-Sat.) Winter hours (Nov.-March) run 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Mon.-Sat. It's at the corner of N. Hwy. 89A and Forest Road, a block north of the Y.
If you're coming in on AZ 179 from I-17, the South Gateway will be on your left in the Tequa Plaza as you enter the Village of Oak Creek; it's set back a block from the highway. Both chamber (928/284-9582) and Forest Service (928/284-5324) people offer information here 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. daily, except that the chamber office closes at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
Oak Creek Vista serves as the North Gateway (8 a.m.-5 p.m. daily except when blocked by snow), well worth a stop for the view if you're coming on AZ 89A from Flagstaff. This is the smallest visitor center and focuses mostly on recreation in the national forest; you can purchase books and maps. Oak Creek Vista is 12 miles south of Flagstaff and 15.3 miles north of Sedona.
Coconino National Forest
The Red Rock Ranger District (8375 Ariz. 179, just south of the Village of Oak Creek; write P.O. Box 20429, Sedona, AZ 86341-0429, tel. 928/203-7500, www.fs.fed.us/r3/coconino, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.) supplies information on camping, hiking, Native American ruins, back-road drives, and road conditions in the national forest surrounding Sedona. You can purchase regional maps and books.
Sedona Public Library (3250 White Bear Rd., 928/282-7714, www.sedonalibrary.org) is open noon-5 p.m. Sun., 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Mon. and Wed., 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tues. and Thurs., and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Fri.-Sat.; head west 3.1 miles on Hwy. 89A from the Y, turn north on Dry Creek Road, then make the first left on White Bear Road.
The main post office (928/282-3511) is on Hwy. 89A just west of the Y; another is in West Sedona at 2081 W. Hwy. 89A on the southwest corner with Sunset Drive. Sedona Medical Center (3700 W. Hwy. 89A, 928/204-3000) is on the west edge of town. The nearest hospital is 19 miles southwest of Sedona at the Verde Valley Medical Center (269 S. Candy Lane in Cottonwood, 928/634-2251, www.nahealth.com).
