As an art center, what Sedona lacks in size, it makes up for in quality. Its 40 art galleries display an impressive range of original art. Southwestern themes run through much of the work, in colors, forms, Native American motifs, and cowboy legends. Most of the art galleries lie along the first half mile of Hwy. 179 south of the Y; others can be found in Uptown Sedona along the first half mile of Hwy. 89A north of the Y.
Fountains, sycamore-shaded courtyards, and Spanish-colonial architecture create a delightful atmosphere at Tlaquepaque (0.3 mile south on Hwy. 179 from Hwy. 89A, 928/282-4838, www.tlaq.com), an enjoyable starting point for a trip into Sedona's art world. A bit farther south, Garland's Navajo Rugs (411 Hwy. 179, 928/282-4070) has an especially fine selection. A couple of blocks farther, Hillside Sedona (671 Hwy. 179) offers galleries and restaurants in an attractive shopping area decorated with sculpture. In Uptown Sedona, Sinagua Plaza (320 N. Hwy. 89A) has galleries and dining.
