Downtown rings to the sound of gunfire as cowboys stage shootouts every morning year-round at the train depot. Gunfights also break out on the streets every evening during summer. A band in Civil War-era garb plays tunes most evenings in summer. The Visitor Information Center will tell you the places and times of these events, all of which are free.
Vintage war birds take to the skies above Valle (north of Williams) for the High Country War Birds Air Display (928/635-1000, www.planesoffame.org) on the last weekend in June; a car show runs too. Townsfolk celebrate July 4th with a parade and fireworks. Working cowboys show what they've learned in the Cowpuncher's Reunion Rodeo on the first weekend in August. A classic car show and a battle of the bands bring back the 1950s in the Cool Country Cruise-In and Route 66 Festival in mid-August. Top rodeo cowboys compete in the PRCA Rodeo on Labor Day weekend. Mountain Village Holiday runs from Thanksgiving to New Year's Day with arts and crafts and, on the first Saturday in December, a parade of lights.
